R&D Engineer (Electrical)

Job Purpose:

Working for the Lead Design Engineer in charge of Controls, they will be responsible for assisting in design projects from concept to production, as well as working on current product. The work will generally be of an electrical/electronic nature (including software programming).

There will be a considerable amount of working in and around the vehicles we manufacture/convert, taking accurate measurements and making design assessments. There may also be the occasional requirement for ‘hands-on’ work during the prototype stage of design and operating the vehicles, as required, during testing will also be necessary.

We would also consider a recent graduate looking for a start in a developmental role, as all training can be provided.


Main Tasks:

  • Conceptual design of new electrical and control solutions.
  • Arrange the creation of prototype parts and assemblies – could be hands on.
  • Liaison with internal/external suppliers as part of the design process, as required.
  • Creation/adaption of software (Codesys).
  • Creation of electrical circuit drawings and harness design, where required.
  • Modifications and amendments to legacy data/software.
  • Visiting exhibitions and customer/supplier’s premises, where required. This may involve travelling abroad.
  • Accompanying prototypes to external test houses, where necessary. This may involve travelling abroad.
  • Attending meetings to support other departments with respect to technical input.
  • Working as part of a close-knit team to ensure the future quality of the product range.

Skills and Abilities:

  • A degree of HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering is required
  • Knowledge of modern HGVs and their control systems would be advantageous
  • High levels of accuracy and a focus on attention to detail
  • Well organised and methodical; practical and pragmatic; imaginative
  • Ability to present ideas and solutions to colleagues and customers at all levels
  • Experience of the creation of wiring diagrams and harness designs
  • Proficiency in the use of 2D and 3D CAD would be beneficial
  • Experience of PLC programming using Codesys would be invaluable
  • Able to use Microsoft Office products
