Sweeping Success March 2007 (Vehicles & Plant Technology Magazine)

Recent press reports highlighting how the City money men have sucked the life out of British industry, while putting little of any value back into our economy, seem to have little chance of forcing changes to the system. But even if they do, the changes will have come to late to save many of our top brands from falling under foreign control.
Speculation that `if` and `when` Gordon Brown takes over at Number 10, he will `do something about it`, won`t stop the circling sharks finding more prey in the meantime. But an ability to build up a strong and successful brand and keep it growing without any need to go to the banks, the stock market or deal with those equity traders seems to be the best way of avoiding disaster. Examples? JCB is one. But without doubt, Scarab Sweepers is another.
There was intense speculation when Scarab founder Rodger Hoadley died, not to mention unpleasant speculation that the company would self-destruct without him.

Scarab Road Sweeper and Crew
So news that Scarab production output continues to rise, that the company is seeking wider world markets for its products and is continuing to design and develop new products all goes to suggest that the new management team is more than on top of the task. And there`s good news about the UK market, too.
As Andy Farley, parts and service manager at Scarab, recently explained, customers are increasingly asking more from OEMs. As a result of increased penalties for failure to meet contract commitments, more and more customers are signing up to the Scarab customer service contract scheme to provide a `safety net` at a controlled price.
It seems as though the well-proven design of Scarab products is playing a major part here. Some machines are now being double or even treble shifted to provide sweeping 24/7 and, as Farley points out, Scarab`s service or full repair and maintenance contracts have to be geared not only towards work rate but tailored around the periods when the machine is actually available.
Using factory trained staff and genuine parts not only makes for increased reliablity but, as many operators are now finding out, can dramatically increase the residual value over machines without a verifiable service record.
You want Proof ? There is now a waiting list for pre-owned Scarabs, with the prospect of global warming refocussing local authority attention on lower carbon footprint of the single engined sweeper range.
