Scarab Winning the Environmental Race

Scarab`s introduction of a more cost effective and environmentally aware design for heavy duty truck mounted sweepers has seen a steady and consistent growth in market share over the past few years. Scarab being the first to introduce the "single engined" truck mount sweeper concept also led the way by offering as standard full stainless steel body construction. Lower operating costs and proven durability throughout the whole Scarab range has seen recognition in the Northern Ireland market place complimented by the after sales support offered by McCreath Taylor (NI) Ltd of Lisburn.

Environmentally Scarab have established themselves as market leaders for a full and efficient range of sweepers including an urban/precinct sweeper the Scarab Minor, mid-ranged truck mounted sweepers the Scarab Merlin Hydrostatic and the Scarab Monic with Omnidrive and one of the most comprehensive ranges of large truck mounted sweepers with alternative drive systems the Scarab Magnum Hydrostatic and Scarab Magnum Unidrive.

Recognising that the older design of truck mounted sweepers that use a second auxiliary engine utilise the chassis gearbox for sweeping speed control, Scarab`s introduction of the Scarab Magnum range with Unidrive has met with approval by those operators looking for the simplest of sweeping equipment. Utilising a 9 speed gearbox, on any chassis from 13 tonne GVW up to around 18 tonne, sweeping speed range is from around 1mph up to whatever speed matches efficient sweeping performance. To engage sweeping mode is just a matter of turning a key!
The overall package is impressive, 6.5 cubic metre body payload volume, 1800 litre separate rust proof water tank and on the smallest 13 tonne GVW chassis a legal payload exceeding 6500Kgs. At a competitive price the Scarab Magnum range with its overall simplicity reducing long term maintenance to a minimum, proven outstanding sweeping capabilities offers the most critical operators an unrivalled overall performance.
McCreath Taylors Scarab Hire Fleet in action
This Scarab 5000, one of half a dozen vehicles now in the McCreath Taylor hire fleet from the Minor up to the 5000, is mounted on a Leyland Daf chassis with a 5cu. meter plus capacity.

The Scarab Hydrostatic range of truck mounted sweepers, effectively the same as sweeping with an automatic transmission, remains as popular as ever. What has made a significant impact is the independent assessment of the Scarab truck mounted sweepers relative to being fuel efficient and significant reduction of exhaust polution. All newly registered truck engines have to meet Euro 3 noise and emissions, which though under consideration, is not yet the case for auxilary engines. Doing away with the "donkey engine" as Scarab have done on all their truck mounted sweepers, has other implications too, such as saving the time and effort involved in daily checks of oil and water, and not least, saving expenditure on fuel. Even though the "donkey engine" can legally run on red diesel saving around 40 pence per litre over derv, the cost of say 50 litres a day for 250 days a year, or 12,500 litres is not insignificant. Even allowing for the fact that the Scarab drive systems have to utilise the more expensive derv (duty paid diesel), the net saving is still likely to be in the order of over £1,000 per annum. Straight cost is one thing , but increasingly, the public is concerned about diesel emissions, particuarly NOx and particulates and using a single engine cuts both these emissions in the proportion of the fuel saved.

Goverment is also committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and saving 10,000 litres of fuel, would result in a reduction of some 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year - no small amount when a typical small car produces around 3 tonnes a year. Considering the majority of council operated truck mounted sweepers are in action in the heart of urban areas, where houses and schools are predominant, Scarab are making significant impact in achieving Enviromental targets of reducing pollution.Whilst Scarab accept the Enviromental accolade they are quick to point out that given any size chassis benefits extend to affording larger body capacity and furthermore larger legal payloads equating to outstanding productivity when compared to the older design of twin engined sweepers.
