Tower Gardens - Skegness

Following the front-page article in the Target on March 19 the Tower Gardens in Skegness have received a spring-clean by East Lindsey District Council staff although the Waterfall that aerates the pond is still not working. When the article appeared it was brought to the attention of Peter Wilson who lives in Claxby and had the answer to ELDC`s problems.
Co-incidentally he was at the time in contact with ELDC on behalf of Scarab Sweepers Ltd of Kent and in the process of offering one of the firm`s Scarab Minor vehicles on trial to solve just such problems. Cleaning staff in the gardens last week complained that their work is made all the harder through thoughtless people breaking glass bottles with the broken shards being ground into the grass near the play area.

John Howard, who retired last year but has come back for the season commented that staff clean the gardens only to find more glass has been broken within a couple of hours, giving the impression that the gardens have not been cleaned.
He drove the demonstration machine last week and felt that it would be just the thing for areas like the Tower Gardens. Although ELDC has both smaller and larger machines neither are suitable for the gardens, the big road sweepers are too heavy on the grass and the smaller street machines aren`t made to suck glass out of grass.

An operative from Scarab Sweepers demonstrates how the machine can pressure wash steps and pavements, getting rid of grime and moss, watched by Peter Wilson with John Howard and Arthur Potts from the ELDC team at work in Tower Gardens.

Of the Scarab Minor John said "It`s proved very useful as the gardens get vandalised every week with people sitting and drinking and just throwing bottles down so they break."
The machine was able to travel over the grass without causing track marks and suck up all the broken glass embedded near the children`s play area. "Its built for places like this," said John. The machine is one of a kind that has been sold all over the World with more than 25 recently going to Moscow. Peter Wilson of Scarab Sweepers explained that it is a multi-purpose machine. It can sweep roads and pavements, is equipped with a high pressure water jet and street washing facilities and can empty gullies in addition to being used to emptying litter bins into. A large tube on the back of the machine acts as a giant vaccuum cleaner with various attachments. All in all it got the thumbs up by ELDC staff who have to do the work on the streets and in the gardens so now Peter Wilson just has to sell it to the council officers at Manby!
